Rumspringa pg. 34-59

The chapter is called "A Glory Old Time." It starts out with a short story about a girl and her family. They are going shoe shopping, and she has to manage all of her younger siblings. She is excited to enter Rumspringa, so she can get a job and go out and not have to be a second mom.

The next part is about Johnny Y. He begins by describing his family. As you read his description, you can see the differences between our societies. Johnny has job and is comfortable with his co-workers. He goes hunting for fun and lives with his parents. When asked if he wanted to be a farmer, he said, "No!"

Then the book starts to talk about the number of Amish farmers is dropping because of the hard work without machinery.

Now, back to Johnny. Johnny tells how his Rumspringa started very peacefully with church. But now Johnny is having a hard time stopping. He loves baseball and the games. But he recently took a weekend fishing trip with his dad and has realized that Amish life isn't that bad.

Next is Phil T. He respects but isn't very close with his parents. His father would mix Phil and his brothers up. His father would start contests between the brothers. When Phil turned 16, he wanted the highest paying jobs, so he went behind his parents back, got a licence, and moved in with one of his brothers. Then, the book starts to talk about how adolescent is a scary time and that teen make rash decisions.

Next is  Emma M. She is bored with Amish life. She grew up with several older sister who were mean to her. Now, Emma is in Rumspringa and gets lots of attentions from guys her age. Her parents became fearful that she would leave, so they all moved from Missouri to Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, Emma wanted to be cool so she started doing bad things. Her new friends said Emma is pretty enough for TV. Emma moved out to live with a pregnant older sister to get away.

Next, the book begins to explain ordnung. This is a list of unwritten rules for Amish people. These vary from place to place. They are revise semiannually. All these rules are hard on the teens. Each generation is making the rules easier.

Next is Lydia T. She was mentioned last chapter. Instead of putting her check in the bank, she spend it on a weekend with friends. As a child, she was good. When she entered Rumspringa, her parents became fearful and begged her to join the Church. In Rumspringa, you are suppose to decide when you are ready to join the Church; however, in Lydia's case, she was forced to join. That's why she broke the rules of the Church. When she got home, she scared that her father will find out, but he doesn't. Instead shortly after, he asks what she wants in her new buggy. Later on, they both go to pick it up and Lydia gets a feeling that it is time to join the Church.

Then, the book starts to talk about how adolescence became a real thing. In human history, adolescence is getting longer. The decision for Amish teens is only harder.

This chapter was very interesting. I was surprised how a lot of the stories had a happy ending.

Why???

Jersey Shore... season 3 episode 1

I know, I know! Jersey Shore? Yes, Jersey Shore. I love Jersey Shore. Why? No, I don't want to be like Snooki, but I love watching them all act like trash. It fascinates me how stupid everyone on that show is. Anyways, I have been really busy this week, so I just recorded Jersey Shore. Today, I finally got the time to sit down and be amazed by how crazy this show is.

The show starts out with everyone coming to the house in New Jersey. Sammi and Ronnie are the first ones there, so the pick rooms first. Jenni, Snooki, and Deena, a new cast member, all room together. Pauly D and Vinny room together. Mike the Situation gets suck with Sammi and Ronnie. Sammi hates Snooki and Jenni, and because Deena is friends with Snooki, Sammi hates Deena, too. Everyone except Sammi and Ronnie are playing drinking games. Mike goes to his room. Deena follows, and she's drunk. Sammi laughs at Deena. Deena gets mad, walks out, and curses at Sammi. Then, Deena starts telling everyone that Sammi's mean. Sammi and Ronnie come outside. They yell at each other. At the end of the show, Sammi and Jenni get in a fist fight.

All I can say is WOW. This is why I love Jersey Shore. In one hour, they do so many dumb things. It's the first episode, and there's already been a fist fight.

Snow and how it hates me

Old wallpaper

Recently, it's been snowing where I live. It sucks. I mean it's pretty for five minutes until you get outside. It's cold and windy. Two days ago, My friend and I were going home. We get in my car, start it, and wait for the ice to melt off my back and front window. We waited for 15 minutes. Granted my car could be slow, but if there wasn't snow we wouldn't have to even wait for the ice to melt. Then, in my friend's housing addition my car slipped TWICE. That's the fifth time my car has slipped in that addition. I have decided that if my car slips in that addition once or twice more, I'm going to start dropping my friend off at the enterance. She can walk to her house. Then, when I got home, I turned on my laptop and my wallpaper was this...

This made me so mad that I changed my wallpaper to this. I just want live somewhere warm. I hate the snow so so so much. It's the worst part of winter....

Rumspringa pg. 3-33

Rumspringa is a non-fiction book about Rumspringa, an Amish tradition where Amish youth go out into the world and explore tempations. At the end of Rumspringa, the teens must decide whether or not to be baptized in the Amish Church or to remain in the normal world. This book contains interviews and research documenting young people making their decision.

The first chapter is called "Going Away." The chapter starts out with a short story of a group of Amish girls hanging out. They are walking around a neighborhood which is most Amish. Then, all of the girls go to one the girl's house. There they begin to wait for the guys to signal them to come outside so they all can go out.

Then, the book begins to explain a real Rumspringa party. This party is located in Shipshewana, Indiana. While the girls are working at home and hanging out, the guys are working. Everyone gets jobs after leaving school in eighth grade, and they give their paychecks to their parents. After work, the guys to go pick up the girls. The guys shine a flashlight in the girls' window to signal them. As the girls are leaving, the parents tell them to be careful but don't mention a curfew. Most Rumspringas last the whole weekend. The girls get in the cars and do anything they have been told not to do (e.g. drinking, smoking, etc.). They stop at a convenience store, where they buy alcohol, steal snack, and change into mainstream clothes. Now the teens are "ready to party." The teens drive to the scene of the party which is usually a hidden location. Everyone drinks beer, but vodka is available to spike soft drinks. In one corner, people are passing around joints of marijuana. In another corner, people are trying harder drugs like cocaine and crank. A lot of them are addicted. Also, teens couple up and "head off into the darkness." In the morning, many of the partygoers wake up at the party site.

Then, the book explains the meaning and purpose of Rumspringa. The purpose, according to one interviewee, is to find a partner, marry, and join the Church. 80 to 90 percent of teens do return to the Church.

The book now goes into personal accounts. First is Joann H. She is worried about finding a good husband. Next is Lydia T. She has already joined the Church but still goes to Rumspringa because she's not ready to let go of the partying. After her is Gerald Y, who is addicted to cocaine. His girlfriend said she would leave him if he didn't stop. Then is Marlys B runaway from home and lives with her boyfriend. They are trying to decide whether or not to be Amish. Next, Johny Y is too old to go to Rumspringa but isn't ready.

Now the book begins to explain how the Amish Church started. It started in the late Middle Ages. The Amish  don't baptize infants only adults. Then it explains the differences between the Amish and Mennonites. In the mid-seventeenth century, the Amish came to America.

At the end of the chapter, the book discusses the difficulty of Rumspringa. Teens have to consider life with and without the Amish Church. Teens have to make a decision that could forever change their lives.

I am liking the book so far. It is very interesting. Personally, I was surprised how extreme the parties are.  At times, it can be alittle slow. I just couldn't put the book down. I surprised myself by reading so much and enjoying it.
